Property tax tax deduction might be repealed

well, this just sux

http://www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/...tax-plan_x.htm

WASHINGTON — Members of President Bush's tax commission planned to propose Tuesday to radically shrink and simplify federal tax forms, in part by doing away with popular deductions such as the one for state and local taxes.

Also they are thinking about reducing the mortgage interest deduction down to a maximum of $300,000 from $1.1 million. That sucks too.

The funny part is that "commission" was set up to "encourage homeownership". Yah, encourage purchases by limiting there deduction...that always works.

Consider yourselves lucky. When I moved to Canada, I wasn't pleased to discover there is "zero" tax deduction for mortgage interest here Now that REALLY sucks!!!

From what I'm reading in the papers today, it has little to no hope of getting passed. Thank God. I have a feeling it's a distraction technique/give back to get other parts of the plan approved... "hey we gave in on the deduction repeal thing, now pass the rest of it" ... at least I hope taht's the case.

I don't think it has a chance of passing either, but just don't like the fact that they are even talking about it. That means someone else will bring it up later down the road, and eventually it will get chipped away and will happen. Everyone's mortgage here in San Francisco is well above $300k. If it passes, Bush won't be coming here anytime soon. Oh yeah, come to think of it, we haven't seen him here for the past 5 years Now I know why!!!

i think it has more to do with everyone being liberal out of the womb out there, but i could be wrong (I live/work in NYC and I'm no liberal by any means, but you can't swing a dead cat around here without bumping into the motherload of liberals... not that there's anything wrong with that )
