Outer Banks, but where?

I'm planning a trip for a few nights to *somewhere* along the NC Coast with my friends in August. I'm having a hard time deciding exactly where, since the Outer Banks extend for quite a distance. I've been to Kitty Hawk before last year, and that was certainly very nice and fairly quiet. Then again, there are other places like Hatteras, Rodanthe, and even Ocracoke. How about places like Morehead City or maybe even Wilmington, NC? Or should I just save some driving time and stick with the northern OBX? Recommendations would be great, since I want to plan in advance for perhaps a 3-night stay or so.

Thanks in advance. Oh, and if anyone has been diving there, chime in on the experience. I've got the certification and want to use it

I would recommend that you go to the area with the most bars and highest quantity of party girls.

But that's just me....

Just came back from Kitty Hawk/Southern Shores. Both were very nice.

Go North, Duck if you don't mind the people and crowds.

But my favorite is Corolla, you get into the beach club, the beach is gorgeous and theres actually quite a bit to do. Make sure to hit up the BBQ place off the gravel road off the bay side. Best carolina barbeque around.

So I've picked out the destination and the hotel. Since we're going to be spending 3 nights, I think its sufficient to hit all areas from Hatteras, Ocracoke, to Kitty Hawk and even Corolla over the time period.

What's the best driving route? Specifically for those folks coming from Central NC, is US 64 a good drive? It looks like a sweet autobahn blast, which might make it worth the extra hour coming from Central VA (I-95 to Rocky Mount). The alternative is the "normal" way, taking US 460 from Richmond down the Tidewater area then heading south.
