I go where the experts are so yes I go to AVS for answers. That's why I come here as well.

I have a Hitachi Ultravision 60V500. I'd like to get something like the SXRD if I can unload the Hitachi. There are a few 1080p displays but they are $$$$ and there aren't many 1080p sources other than high end media PCs.

That is cool! Hitachi builds a really nice set. Any word on when they are going to introduce a LCoS set? I have my eye on the Sony SXRDs and the JVC DILA's...if they ever come to market.

My big thing with 1080p is having the ability to process/scale stuff. Products like the Algolith Mosquito do a very nice job of cleaning up the picture (above and beyond with a sets internal processing can do), but will soon be able to output 1080p30, which will be pretty cool as far as resolution and detail goes.

It stinks...I just hate spending 5 grand and then KNOWING (and I know this will happen!) that I will have a technological paperweight 3 years down the road...at least with CRTs there wasn't a lot of improvement each year With HDTVs the technology is improving so rapidly...hopefully a 1080p input will help cut that potential down so that I can at least buy an outboard processor when the upgrade syndrome arrives...

Chris

Whether it's home theatre, cell phones or computers the reality is its on it's way to being obsolete by the time you get it out of the box. I've only had my Ultravision for a year and a half and it's already half the price and middle of the road.
Chris, you should check out the DVDO iScan products if you are in the market for a scaler. I think I'll send the link to Santa this year.

Ray thanks for explanations! Although I consider myself more knowledgable than the average Joe, I can see how well stuff is being marketed these days, and people like me misunderstand the features and capabilities of today's home theater devices.

I'm only passing on the knowledge I've acquired from other people.

You are absolutely correct on the marketing angle. I'm disgusted every time I browse an electronics flyer or ad. I've also given up asking technical questions to sales staff at the retailers. My advise to the average consumer is to arm yourself with knowledge by reading reviews and forums then go to the store only to haggle price. If you do your research you already know more than the average sales person.

Chris

You might want to compare to Brillian's 65" LCoS 1080p when it is available (I think 1st quarter '06). Their 65" 720p ($6k) has been getting outstanding reviews (equal to Sony's top of the line Qualia at $10k) but you will only find them in some limited high-end A/V stores, not Best Buy or Circuit City. Their 720p spec's can be found here:
