My X5 saved my life

I'm posting from my iPhone so I'll keep this short. Yesterday at around 5am I hit a cement barrier on the freeway at around 75 mph on my way to the airport with no sleep the day before. I fell asleep behind the wheel only to wake a split second before impacting the wall. I was able to turn the wheel just enough to avoid a head on impact but the momentum stll carried me into the wall. The collision was intense and I hit the side drivers window with head harder than I could ever imagine. The side curtian airbag did it's job and though I hit as hard as I did I was able to recover enough control to redirect the X5 to the side of the freeway. Tire smoke filled the cabin and the X5 was in bad shape front to back on the drivers side. Even the rear suspension was twisted from the impact.

I called a tow truck and a friend and in 20 minutes was on my way to the airport. I did miss my flight but ended up at my destination a few hours later tired but uninjured. I escaped what would otherwise have been a serious injury and a trip to the hospital.

Lesson learned...I'm not superman and need to take driving while tired more serious because I drive all day in my line of work.

I've got to run but I'll follow up with photos next week when I return.

A lot of times, my line of work keeps me up late or we work while most are asleep. On such occasions, i just arrange for a car service or take a taxi. Glad to hear nobody was hurt and the X did it's job

Very good to read you are ok, LabGuy...
you will be sore for awhile, and the car can
be replaced. You were very fortunate and
that X probably saved your life.
Good Luck, mD

Glad to hear you walked away from the collision. It could have been much worse. Driving while tired is supposedly as bad as driving while intoxicated.

I am glad the German engineering worked as promised! The only good thing to come out of this will be that you will get a new car! Start planning something fun!

Thank god for head curtain airbags huh, the ITS (inflatable tube system) airbag they use on the X5 holds air in it to protect from secondary impacts and so on against the side.

I avoid driving while overly tired if at all possible, and if I have to I crank the stereo with some balls out death metal that you can not sleep through if you tried. A friend and fellow tech recently fell asleep at the wheel in his leased E90 and woke up on a stop sign... costing him a front bumper and fog light. Scary stuff.

Glad you made it out unharmed and didn't involve any other vehicles! I guess look at the silver lining and start looking for the next X5.
