It's so flawed all we need to know is that it's pointless.

Pointless as it may be, if the govt is giving
away coins for a clunker why not take advantage
of whatever money one can get.

No expert, but the "first tier" is $3500 and, that "top tier" of $4500 is hard
to reach, imo: if one has a used car, that fits in the Clunker Dough parameters,
the seller would probably get that price or close, for a trade in. And, if one
has a $3500 clunker model, and that car is registered/plated etc., I am not
sure there is a big population of those people that can/will loan qualify for
that new ride...

I guess I mean if JoeSixPack is rolling to his boring, low paying
job in his clunker, he probably won't be able to do the loan for his new econ
car. I'm sure some people will "qualify" and buy, but many would get that
dough on a trade-in; used cars, of any running condition, are in short supply
in many markets, say my Geezer buds who were/are in the biz.

If it helps dlr "traffic" and, moves some cars, I'm all for it...it's simply convoluted
imo, but what gov't program isn't.

Simply, cash for clunkers is a guaranteed reimbursed trade value. Nothing more. So if you're trading in your 2005 Explorer, if it has a KBB of say $5,000. You see nothing via 'cash for clunkers'. Although, some dealerships are giving trade-in value and then an additional $4,500.

When the car is traded in it has to be euthanized. Rendered useless. The dealer has to drain the oil and run a solution that they have to purchase from the Govt. Through the engine for 20 minutes or until it blows.

So they really can't give a double trade in because the car has to then be shredded.

My brother is a dealer. The paperwork that has to scanned into the computer to accompany every deal is about an inch thick.

the Govt wants these 250,000 cars off the road forever. The money allocated should be gone in a few weeks if not sooner.

Good info, Skiboats...and, to "our rescue", comes those geniuses
at the NHTSA, whom just published today, a
136 page Rules & Regs Guide to the ~$4G Clunkers deal.

By the time it gets fully off the presses, the dough will be gone...
I love my gov't @ "work"...

Not finding a lot of participating dealers I want or know on the cars.gov site.

Anyway, my qualifying clunker ('95 Rodeo) is a 2nd car used barely once a week. I'm not going to pick up a new car payment to save $4500 right now. We'll probably need a minivan in a few years though, too bad now is not a few years.
