Cars for clunkers hurts retail sales

As per CNBC:

Auto sales up 2.4%.
Retail sales down 8.4%

The consumer is now leveraged for future months as they have a car payment and higher insurance premium that they didn't have before.

Buick IS huge in Asia, when I was in China there were NICE looking buicks, not like the crappy looking ones around here. Also, when I was in Europe, I saw some really eye catching Fords, that was over a year ago, still only ugly Fords here in the states, anyone know why?

Not surprised about the retail sales and, don't disagree that the CfC deal had some effect. This retail thing,
a huge part of GDP, is not coming back next week or, next month, or maybe even next Qtr.

Other than groceries, some school stuff for the kiddoes, and a few other normal replacement things, what the
hell "new" does someone need right now? A Slightly Saving/Scared Population, as opposed to the "buy it on CCs
and worry about it later" mode, is impacting retail sales, but the econ can't have it both ways, currently.

A couple of thoughts:

In Europe, the Fords and Opels and Vauxhalls are a lot smaller than their US cousins and the Big 3 don't think that they'll sell. In Europe, annual registrations are tied to the size of the engine, so the smaller the engine the lower the registration cost. A lot of Americans equate bigger cars with being safer, so the smaller Euro cars probably wouldn't sell. (With the exception of the hot rod 4banger turbos, but I don't know why those don't come over)

The safety and emissions regs in China are far less stringent than the US, and I think that limits bringing the exterior designs to the US, but that's just a guess.

lol at 4 banger turbos.. good info and probably very true. I was looking at the A3, and I'm sure i suffer from the common misconception here in the states, but it just seemed like i would be crushed (if the bigger cars could catch me that is).

I hope none of you went online to "cars.org" to find out any of this info. because if you accepted their term & security disclaimer, everything..., let me say that again, EVERYTHING on your computer, including the computer itself, BECOMES PART OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. All your info can be monitored, copied, audited and sent to DoT, CARS, investigative agencies (domestic AND foreign)
