Italian tour suggestions

I want to plan a trip to Italy in the spring. Venice, Rome and Florence are on the must do list. Tuscany would be nice too. I figured a tour for this portion being I'm a first time traveler and then go to the Amalfi Coast for a few days to chill and relax after running around with a tour group. I haven't done any homework yet other than looking at the Perillo Tours and my friend was looking at some smaller tour groups. I don't need to stay at a Ritz equivalent but I don't want to stay in some rinky dink hotels.

Any suggestions?

When staying in Rome, stay at the Rome Cavalieri. Trust me on this.

It looks beautiful. Am I correct in my assumption that as a first timer, a tour is the best way to see Italy?

One of our best holidays ever was when we towed our caravan (RV) from Inverness all the way down to Venice epic trip. Stayed a Rosolina Mare. Then on down to Florence. You will love it.

I would recommend a trip to San Marino - its a cute little town in the mountains, that is actually a independent state. I wouldn't spend more than an afternoon there - but its worth a visit

Contact Angel Tours in Rome. They have English-speaking tour guides. We did a couple of these tours, and were very pleased. The guides we had were Art or Art History grad students studying in Rome. So they knew all about the area, the art, etc. Small group, walking tours. Very laid back, and fun.

Italy is my favorite country to vacation in. Although Daniel and his partner are focused on villa rentals, they have a lot of good (and opinionated) travel tips and articles on Vbella | Holiday Homes in Italy I have used them for villa rentals in various parts of Italy on all of my visits.

I'm jealous that you're going. I LOVE the food there and the people, especially outside the cities, are fantastic.

Don't forget to visit a small village square before sunset and watch all the families bonding -- wish we had more of those family situations in the U.S.

I first drove to Venice, then Rome and Vatican, and then drove to Florence. Then drove to Pisa en route to Monaco and Nice.

I do not plan on going to Venice again. Riding boats on sanitation water is not my idea of vacation. Florence is nice if you like old Castles or churches. I spent 2 days there. You can spend a week in Rome....lots to see. Vatican is must see. I would definitely do the beautiful drive to Pisa and Monaco. And Nice in France is a must visit again for me. Stay in Nice and go to casinos in Monaco during the day.

Brian - I live that family situation. It's pretty cool when you're old enough to appreciate it. I just spent a week at the beach with one of my cousins. We laughed our asses off recalling all the memories.
