Best kitchen knives money can buy... ?
My brother (who is also my business partner) is almost done building his home. I'd like to get him a fantastic house warming gift and know he would appreciate a knife set. But let me be clear cause I know we have had knife conversations before.. I'm looking to buy him the unquestionably best knife set made. I don't mind spending big money on it as I know it's something he would really enjoy. He just built a beautiful kitchen with a HUGE wolf range w/ French cooktop, etc. So going beyond the Henkel, Wusthoff, etc. Are there knives that are absolutely the most gorgeous thing money can buy? The type of knife set that someone would probably not spend the money on themselves but if they got as a gift would flip out? What are they? Thanks... B

ahem....cough cough like watches.
Tough call IMO as knives are really a personal thing. How about a custom cutting board that fits into the style of things. Its not going to be the bling appeal like knives but seriously, I would not buy knives for anyone since it's so subjective to feel... The cutting board can just be as intricate/extravengent that is something unique... Let me grab a pic of one or 2 for you... |

There are beautiful knives out there. As some one who loves to cook, the first thing I know is that people should pick their own knives. How they feel in your hand is so important to how you use it. I am including a few links to knives that are super expensive and pretty cool. Consider getting him a gift certificate from a store that specializes in knives and let him pick what is comfortable for his hands.
Cut Brooklyn makes really pretty knives! Cut Brooklyn I'll think of some more. You can also look into custom japanese knife manufacturers. Japanese knives are my personal favorites! Good luck!

Chefwong,
It is Homepro from Gardenweb. I have not been posting on either forum in a few days. Did you look at the Roberns?

I know it's not as extravagant as a set of fancy knives but if someone gave me a *unique* cutting board...from a local artisian, I would be quite happy to use it everyday.... |

My vote is for Japanese knifes. I picked up a set for my bro as a house warming gift when I was in Kamakura. I had the equivalent of his name engraved in Kangi on the blades. He loves them. I think they're quite a bit of work to take care of, though...
