I also thought when I first read "GC" that they were dumping the Grand Cherokee - looking at all of the other Jeep models on the list, I was like "damn, they might as well just dump the brand" (not that any of the others are worth a flip).
I thought I had read somewhere that someone was looking to purchase the Viper name and make it a stand-alone company??

I heard a rumor months ago about a potential sale of Viper but a buyer didn't come through.

Wow, so much misinformation out there, and so much mis-interpretation! I think it's time to set the record straight...
In June of 2012 when current supplier contracts expire, Chrysler/Dodge is planning to sell the Challenger to Toyota Motors Corp. Toyota is scheduled to replace the aging Highlander in 2012 with a new crossover SUV model that will be heavily based on the Challenger (using many of the original stamping tools from the Brampton plant). Called the Challander, it will seat 7 and have a sliding side door (due to complaints about awkward rear seat access in the current Challenger). The interior will be redesigned with a heavily slanted dashboard, and the center stack will feature hundreds of buttons for the rado, nav, A/C and other technologies. Performance though will not be compromised. While the base model will feature a 2.0L turbo V4, the SRT (Street and Racing Toyota) will offer an all-new Lexus-developed 538 HP V11 engine that will put out 680 ft. lbs. of torque. And forget about trying to alter any of the engine/transmission control modules - Toyota will be using a hack-proof Apple/MAC control system that will make any aftermarket tuning impossible. Want to drop in a lower t-stat? Don't even try, the thermostats will be permanently welded to the engine block. With 21.2" wheels and Prius-inspired performance brakes, the Challender SRT models will come in several "buzz" colors, like Dodge has done over the years. Expect to see Sushi Orange Pearl, Teriyaki Crazy Bronze Clear Coat and Detonator White Rice Pearl. R/T models will sport a performance exhaust system with a single 9.5" rear outlet. A concept model of the new Challender is rumored to be unveiled at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show in Osaka. So far, the press in Japan has been pretty excited about this vehicle. No photos are available at this time, but spy shots are bound to hit the net within the next year. |
