747 @ San Diego airport?!
That airport can't handle widebody aircraft, let alone a 747-400. Getting that thing to land -- forget taking off -- on that short runway would only be possible if it were basically totally empty, and even then, using slightly unorthodox STOL techniques, I'm sure. So? Any thoughts? Just curious!

When you absolutely positively need to land the San Diego Airport becomes a viable option. Taking off will require the minimum amount of fuel, crew and removal of all non-essential items from the plane. You might even hear the tower say GUN IT! instead of the usual clear for takeoff command.

Maybe they were "debating schedules" and missed LAX?

I followed your suggestion. I gather the San Diego Chargers don't fully load a 747.

You'd be surprised where a 747 can land...and takeoff... By looking at the map, there is approx 3500 ft of runway, that should be enough !
Have fun with this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05iQJCM8l1c

You can't find the fact a 747-400 with Northwest markings took the San Diego chargers to London in 2008? And that the Chargers just played again in London?

well yeah, i found it once i searched for "747 northwest san diego chargers" but without including "chargers" i did not :P i had no idea they were transported around in that thing. still, i would have loved to see that thing land at SAN's short runway -- and would love even more to see it take off again
