Question for you diesel guys
My dad has a Touareg V10 TDI. He is experiencing sporadic excessive exhaust. It comes and goes. It happens at different times, he can be taking off from a light or cruising on the highway. The smoke is white, but overwhelming. VW, of course, says vehicle is operating at manufacturers specifications. Any ideas? It's a 2007. He has a service appointment tomorrow at a different dealer. The one he used to go to only had one tech that was familiar with diesels. I think his car is a white elephant here in the states. My brother seems to think that it happens when there is some kind of build up that needs burning off.

Black smoke is normally related to carbon build-up and not a big deal, white smoke could mean a bigger problem?
Is the car consuming coolant?

best thing is to search vw forums or bmw forums for 5 sieries diesels .
my thoughts are turbo oil seals or perhaps the crank vent system as it could be oil burning . or it could just be cold weather causing the issue .condensation in the oil or in the fuel . diesels are strange beasts . |

I'll do that. I thought maybe with the techs around here someone would have some words of wisdom. The US Touareg site is terrible, very rude. (I love it here). One of our members turned my on to a UK site, I'll have a go with them.
Thanks

We searched there but came up with nothing. Those boys were rude. My brother posted a question a few years back after searching and coming up empty handed. They suggested he do a search, when he said he did and showed the results he got, they deleted his thread. I went to Scottie's buddies on the UK Touareg site.

DIESEL TROUBLESHOOTING WHITE SMOKE
White smoke usually occurs when there is not enough heat to burn the fuel. The unburned fuel particles go out the tailpipe and typically produce a rich fuel smell. It's not unusual to see white smoke in the exhaust during cold weather until the engine warms up. As mentioned earlier, bad glow plugs or a faulty glow plug control module can cause white smoke on engine start up. Low engine cranking speed may also produce white smoke. If white smoke is still visible after the engine has warmed up, the engine may have one or more bad injectors, retarded injection timing or a worn injection pump. Low compression can also be a source of white smoke. Air in the fuel system can also cause white smoke. http://www.aa1car.com/library/diesel.htm

Here is another thread, it seems like the smoke is related to poor quality fuel
There are approximately 640 2006 V10 Touaregs sitting in storage at VW facilities across the US. They came into ports earlier this year to be launched in June. However, the V10's are now equipped with particulate filters (not urea filter) and when existing high sulfur fuels are used the particulate filter does it's job blowing white smoke from the exhaust. Since this would be alarming to both the owner and those around the vehicle VW chose to delay the introduction until Sept. So the 2006 V10's will sit waiting for ULSD to hit the market in volume which is expected to be September. BTW - The 2006 V10's were able to meet the 2006 heavy vehicle (over 6000 lbs) emissions standards in all 50 states and thus will be available in even the CARB states until the end of this year (2006). This is a big deal if you want one legally in these 5 states. '07 Touareg Diesel? - Page 2 - TDIClub Forums

I had a new touareg 2.5tdi se for 2 weeks , nice car , dodgy electrics . test drove an X5 4.4i se , decided X5 is more comfortable drive .
have you driven your fathers V10 tdi , I bet that engine is magnificent . as for the smoke issue , vw says alle ist goed , so wait and see what develops , probably weather or fuel related , probably nothing to be concerned about . |
