Comparing with our E46 M3, the interior looks quite bland, especially the black interior. The brushed aluminum trim does little to brighten things up. Again, you think that they would have put higher-quality interior trim....maybe if you get the extended leather package it will look richer. It seems like the the E46 M3 interior looks more "richer" looking and with having cinnamon interior, it brighten things up. The SMG paddles on the M5 steering wheels are "beefier" and wider than the E46 M3 SMG paddles. The M5 SMG paddles are more ergonomic. The "+" and "-" symbols light up white when the headlights are on....The M5 SMG shift knob is illuminated. I miss the orange display in the speedometer cluster, though the needles are red, though the numerals are white. Notice that in the speedo, 80-200 mph numerals are really clustered together. Also, outside of the M5 looks very stealth. Except for the exterior mirror, side grill, and rear spoiler, the M5 looks quite similar to the 5-series. There is NO spare tires....like the E46 M3, it has the M-mobility system. No runflats tires. The hood feels like it is aluminum like the E46 M3. Kirk in Rancho is getting a 550i and to be honest, a 550i with sports package is probably a great deal (about $65K) and probably more than fast enough for a car that size. In fact, the 550i is approaching the E39 M5 hp/torque.

Looks pretty clean to me
i thought bmw's liked to use the amber lights bc its " better on the eyes?" but yet im seeing a lot of cars going to this "white light" but i do agree about the 550 over the M5. When are the gonna make and MX5 ....just my 50cent

You have to imagine there is a M version of the X on somebodys drawing table at BMW. If anything to simply take on AMG.

It's a really nice car, and surpasses the E39 M5 in speed, handling, braking and technology. I just can't get over the styling though. I know, opinions are like a**holes...
![]() It's just not doing it for me, especially for 90 grand. |

Interesting about the graduation of MPH on the speedo. 0-80 is more 'spaced out', whereas 80-200 is more tight together

Nice pics, Doc! I saw a black M5 at BMW of Arlington today, as it was being unloaded from the delivery truck.
The lower front fascia was the giveaway- more aggressive and there is a different grate than the regular 5er. From the rear, the exhaust looked good, but something about the way the rear wheels was strange. Maybe they looked too far outside the wheel well or too much of the ole neg. camber or something, I couldn't quite place it Also a window sticker of $90K. Yeesh!JV

drove it a couple weeks ago.. bear in mind that this car has a bout 300 miles when I drove it. Straightline speed in P500 mode is awesome, pulls real hard, steering has exceptional feel to it... brakes are awesome and huge up front(very progressive and firm), . I was overall fairly impress with the drive. The active vented perforated seats are really really nice and so is the leather dash. The AL trim looks cheap though for a $95K car. IDrive is idrive but there are so many more settings that you can play with on the suspension, shift speed, and others which is one of those things that are just too superfluous (I'm one of those guys that I set and leave alone). HUD is an awesome option and is a must have. SMG 3 is a lot smoother than the box on my M3 but it's no F430 F1.
Now to the bad stuff. The styling is very bland and I still can't get over the Bangle butt and dane edna eyes. The car I drove had some electrical problems where the heated seats would blow fuses and the radio refuses to work. They're working out the bugs still. If you environmental/tree hugging type, you can forget getting this car. Observed gas mileage in the 30 mins I drove it was 5mpg. (and no I didn't romp on it all the time). People on the M5 board have reported avg between 9-10 in mixed driving. The Exhaust and the motor sound almost like a diesel and is WAY too quiet but of course, nothing that a tubi exhaust won't fix. So would I get it? Maybe. I still love my E39 M5 with the manual 6 speed and the mods on that car put the exceleration at just a bit less than the new M5. For the price increase though, it's really hard to justify at that price range since you pushing really close to some exotics. As for the V10s, BMW should take a lesson from the Gallardo and make it sound like a real car. |
