How Do I Buy A Car From MA If I Have NY Tags/Registration?

I live in NY and will register the car in NY, however the car is in MA. The problem is....

NY commonly issues temp. tags but in my situation, I would just transfer plates.

However, in MA the dealership has informed me that because MA has strange laws and does not accept "temp. tags" and that I cannot simply put my old plates onto the new car. My insurance agent has not been much help, because she only offered that I would need to make two trips.

1. Travel and purchase the car
2. Go back into NY and register the car myself
3. Go back to MA dealership and drive the car home.

This sounds like a hell of a mess, there has to be an easier way..... Any thoughts?

What does "MA doesn't accept temp tags" mean?

Why does a MA dealer care where the car is titled and registered when you drive off of the lot?

In MA, there are no "20-day temporary plates" like in NY nor do they allow "plate-transfers" from an existing car to a new car.

Apparently, the dealer will not allow to drive the car off the lot if the car's "paperwork" is taken care of.

I'm very confused to this whole situation, but if I'm missing something, please let me know. I just want to be able to go pick up the car and drive it back within the confines of the law.

Thunder - Can you shed any light on this? I feel somewhere between the internet research, insurance agent, and the dealership manager; I have been misinformed

I think the confusion is with the "temp tag" issue.

All you have to do is get temp tags from NY and put them on the car. You're not registering the car in MA so their 'temp tag' law has no bearing.

I would suggest that you call NY DMV on Monday and tell them what you're trying to do. Don't bother with MA, they and California are the most ass-backwards over governed ridiculous law states in the US.

Thanks Thunder. This has been so confusing. If I purchased a car in Jersey, I could have just swapped my plates. There needs to be a universal law....

Basically Massachusetts hates people from Out of State. I've bought two cars from MA, as a ME resident, the first was from a piece of shit dealer who made me buy the car via fedex and get a "transit tag" from Maine. Then the second car was from BMW of Peabody, who delivered the car to my door.

People in MA get their tags from the dealer, who has a runner who goes and registers the car for the owner at the BMV while they're doing paperwork. Its retarded.

Have you seen the car yet? Can you do the purchase/paper work using fedex?

I feel like this isn't even worth it anymore, I might as well wait for another car to show up that's "Non-MA"
