Should have gotten a Mac.
Sorry. I couldn't resist. Love my MacBook but also love my Windows 7 homebuilt PC as my primary. I just had to load up a purchased copy of Win 7 since I was running the release candidate beta version and MS has it rigged to reboot every 2 hours once March 1st strikes. I was able to "upgrade" without a clean install with a few tricky moves. I know a clean install would be best but I was being lazy.

Doc, I'm in the same boat kinda. My Dell has been fairly good for the past 3 years. My biggest complaint would be the life of the battery and the cost of a new one. I too will be switching to a HP DV6 series this Sunday. The CEO has a HP and it's been great. My Dell has a tendency to go blank every now and then. It comes back up fine but the blackouts have gotten old. Rather than upgrade to Windows 7, buy memory and a battery, it's more cost effective to just get a new laptop......Phil

Dell laptops are very hit/miss. They're ok for personal use, but I wouldn't recommend them for corporate use. Dell has been rebadging laptops made by Compal (not Compaq) and Quanta for a long time.
Toshiba, Lenovo and Apple are 3 of the few companies that still make their own. HPaq makes their own high end laptops but outsources the personal models. I also prefer HP desktops over Dell these days, especially in corporate use, and for personal use as well.

Our basement must have 10 expired Dell's in it... They're not hideous, but my CFO does spend a lot of time frustrated at the damn thing not working. Not sure if thats HW or SW now. She bought a Vaio laptop which is a flaming pile of crap.
I, on the other hand, can't believe that my macbook is approaching 3 years old. time for an upgrade! |

For those of you with machines that are over a year old, you should download ccleaner and malwarebytes and clean them up.
let me know if you need any assistance with either program. CCleaner alone will reduce startup times and clean out the junk from the registry etc.

Have had my Dell Inspiron laptop for almost 5 years now and works as well as the day that I bought it. Use it both for personal and work use and it has been to the desert during military deployments twice and still works flawlessly. I think that it is really how the user treats the machine as to how well it is going to work in the long run.
As a matter of fact i just installed a larger drive in it (old one was only a 60GB) as I figured that it was a lot smaller investment than buying a new machine. Plus I don't like how all of the major manufacturers will only let you configure anything with a 17" screen with the number-pad on the right hand side and the touch-pad offset.

Agreed. In addition to the 3 Lenovo laptops at home, one of which got very rough use on campus and travelling, we have an eight year old Toshiba Satelite Pro that is still working perfectly (although it does need a new battery)
