Other carriers will, ATT won't. I tried.

AT&T unlocked two Motorola phones for me. Those were at different times in the past year. (I see I had a typo in my previous post. I said that Apple unlocked the phones -- I meant AT&T).

I was just saying I don't know if they will do that for an iPhone.

I am finally able to upgrade at the discounted price ($199) but now the shipping date is mid of July.

I will be upgrading from a 3GS to the 4. Here is how I did it, I had the 3GS on my corporate plan, moved it to personal and as a result ATT relieves you of any contractual obligations. Once that is done, they were asking $399 for the 16GB upgrade on the new iphone. I bitched and moan showing them the newly created contract showing 0 year commitment. Problem solved.

oh and ATT / Apple server infrastructure sucks.

AT&T double charged my CC and it rejected it with the failsafe.
Now when I call "AT&T Premier" enter all my info it says "connecting... we are experiencing high call volume, call back later" CLICK.

Now thats some customer service for ya.

I'm not a Windows fanboi, I don't own a Windows OS based phone, I have blackberry's, I'm anti- fanboi of any product. I gave up being religious about technology a long time ago. I see too much of it on a daily basis and unless something really solves a problem for me or the company, I don't get too excited about it. Right now I'm evaluating CISCO/EMC UCS/VBLOCK, and if it works will cut down server deployment from months to hours/days, now THAT I get excited about

Getting excited about phones and PDA's and laptops/tablets, eh, that's for rookies hahahaha

I hear you on the anti-fanboy sentiment. The last technology battle that I fought was IBM OS/2 vs. Windows NT (and I lost that one because I banked on OS/2).

I don't agree that getting excited about gadgets is for rookies though. I love my gadgets and always will. But I have been excited about deploying a data warehouse on a Cray computer, using Oracle RAC on blade servers, deploying services on hundreds of IBM DataPower XML appliances, etc.

So.... before you throw that "fanboi" stuff at my feet remember
I too gave up being religious about technology a long time ago.
probably a lot longer than you.

We have a Blackberry and before the iPhone I had a Palm 700P.
Before that I had a whatever, before that another whatever.
So I've had my share of technology as well and
like you unless something really solves a problem for me, I don't
get too excited about it either.

In fact I started out with an HP150 computer.
HP Virtual Museum: Hewlett-Packard-150 Touchscreen Personal Computer with Hewlett-Packard 9121 Dual Drives, 1983

As time went on it was clear that for the Arts a Mac was the way to go.
The industry in many ways demanded it. But I've seen enough of
Apple to know that no company is perfect. Apple has had many
holes in their product line that needed filling.

These day's from a song writing, engineering, and performance
perspective the Mac platform is seamless and trouble free
that why i stick with it. One monitor problem fixed under warranty
in 22 years is a good record imo.
If there was another system that did the job
as well I would be embracing it.

As far as evaluating CISCO/EMC UCS/VBLOCK, to cut down
server deployment from months to hours/days? That sounds like a noble
effort for those who need it. But for those who entertain, make records
and engineer movies and the music you love to see and hear that kind of server stuff is for rookies.
