PayPal question For dummies

Someone wants to buy something from me using Paypal.
I have an account already setup. What I don't get is how
the buyer and seller is protected during the transaction.
What keeps either party from scamming the other.

If the buyer sends the money first how does he keep me from
getting the money without delivering the product and
visa versa

From what I have learned there really is no protection.

In the most extreme case I heard of, the buyer sent cash for a computer.
The seller send a "computer" back. It was not a computer that the buyer wanted and it was not working.

But because the seller sent money and the buyer sent a computer, PP was satisfied.

Thanks I appreciate the info. Seems like this site is more
interested in promoting "Real Merchant Account".

However upon further investigation I did find where
Paypal does provide a seller protection in that it outlines
what the seller should do to afford himself some protection.

That's what I was after. Some basic do's and don't ect.
Anyone else like to chime in?

As with any transaction an element of TRUST is assumed for the system to work.

Ask the buyer to send the payment to your Paypal account. (Assuming he trusts you, he will)

THEN: either

1. Send the buyer the item (Assuming you trust him) OR wait till the payment clears. (Assuming he trusts you)

OR

2. When the payment clears (may take 5-10 working days), send the item. (Assuming he trusts you)

Bottom like is: if both parties are true to their words, it should there should not be a problem.
