How about just.....perhaps staying off the roads?

VDOT is generally pretty good about treating roads, I've never seen a road around here that bad. Then again, we don't get that much of the nasty white stuff

Looks like they got hit with more snow than they could handle, from both an equipment and driver training standpoint. They are trying to push a quantity of snow that needs either a blower or a bucket.

The chains on the garbage truck aren't on a non-drive axle, the driver simply hasn't engaged the inter-axle lockout (or the maintenance department hasn't maintained it and it isn't functioning).

Glad it isn't me. Doesn't look like much fun to be a resident.

+1. Like I said, luckily we don't get that much snow in VA, except in the far western, SW, and Northern sections (wind-facing mountains). I don't think it's necessarily a fair comparision since I assume NYC has its own contractors and snow removal.

Virginia has the 3rd most mileage under state maintenance and ownership (behind TX and NC) so they have to deal with snow removal for all the roads except in independent cities and Henrico County. So naturally there's a heckuva lot of money and resources for that kind of stuff. Last winter was ridiculous with the amount of snow but they managed it all despite blowing the budget big time. The 511 call and website work well.

There is an annoying "donut hole" in road treatment and removal though. They will pre-treat and spread the usual salt, but VDOT can only start plowing with approx 8cm of snow or more. So the light-moderate snows can be the biggest headaches to drive in.

The video in the original post is crazy funny but I do feel for the poor guy with the Accord that served as the bumper all the vehicles sliding down. The F250 wins the pinball award.

Why the %^&* is someone not informing drivers of this danger at the bottom of the road? Like perhaps law enforcement or the guy enjoying all of this with the camera?

I have seen one of these videos for Portland Or. It's pretty amazing to watch. I am just glad I am not in there with them.
