"Washington" did nothing to Toyota except fine them for a problem "sticking pedal" that they were required to, but did not report.

Pretty funny.
I don't know if Neil is dumb or not, never seen him before, but there were a lot of people on this board painting Toyota as Lucifer as well. I guess they aren't going to apologize either. Wonder if the US government should pay back the $48 million in fines they collected off Toyota for recalls, some of which weren't ever required except to appease the media?

I think "Washington" and the media ran a collective witch hunt, looking for a villain.

I see nothing "done wrong" by Washington...
Toyota to Pay Record $32.4 Million Government Fine for Safety Recall - DailyFinance It was Toyota who failed to report and lied.

OK, but there was also no admission attached to the payment by Toyota, it was simply more expedient to pay than to argue with NHTSA. I think of the term "without prejudice" but I am not sure if that is the correct legal term in this case.
The US government had to appear to be doing something. Toyota paid to avoid dragging it out.

I guess that is one side of it. The corollary would be that all those drivers who were confused had their foot on the gas pedal instead of the brake, and crashed, got what they deserved too. That would be pretty harsh.
