Funny that you put this up quicksilver. because this is something i have discussed with plenty of people before. There are so many people that WANT to go to jail for various reasons... They get 3 meals a day, healthcare, some form of entertainment (gym, basketball, etc), friends, etc. Being homeless, or having financial issues, there are people who want to get put behind bars...
there is a lot wrong with this picture, but to be honest, i'm glad this guy did this, because this is something that people never actually publicized, and now its getting some attention...

Getting 3 meals a day, healthcare, some form of entertainment (gym, basketball, etc), in his case he feels is a bargain. And if i'm correct he will pay no income taxes. Guess what? We the public will pay for his vacation.
