And the geniuses back in the day thought that having a radio in the car was an issue.

There's a huge difference between talking on a cell phone without using a handsfree or bluetooth and using bluetooth or a handsfree. Are there idiots that text and call while driving and cause accidents? absolutely, but there are also people who use bluetooth to take calls without a problem.

I agree. It always seems like my parents call me when I'm in the car driving.......I usually tell them to call me later.

Since I prohibit the use of mobile devices in my car while driving, I will say my biggest distraction is shuffling between CDs. Between reaching over to the door pockets, getting the CD cases open, ejecting/inserting the disc, I'm probably not a great driver for the 15-20 secs when I swap CDs.

Talking on a phone is distracting, among many other things which people should not be doing while driving handsfree or not...

There are a lot of people who don't need an excuse to drive stupid.
But it seems like every time I see someone driving stupid they're
on a cell phone.

I dunno, how can cops drive with their computers and it isn't dangerous..arent they humans too???

The answer is, BS, it is just as dangerous (or not) as other distracted driving. It depends on the driver and the situation.

Cops aren't supposed to use the computer while driving... they're supposed to stop, do what they gotta do, then go again. That's one of the reasons you often see them parked in random places. But they do use the laptops for navigation to calls. You wouldn't want the cops to show up even later saying they got lost huh?

But I feel how distracted I can get when I do certain things while driving like fumble for the phone, with CD's or an ipod... I save that stuff for redlights. I had an ex get mad at me for not returning her barrage of texts once, wouldn't stop bitching long enough for me to answer why... I had to yell it at her that I was freakin driving a stick shift car through traffic on the way to her house, how the hell was I supposed to text her?!? Yeah... that one didn't last long.

I think if a cop sees someone driving erratically, swerving and all, and pulls them over just to find out they were messing with a phone or other device they should be able to get a ticket for DWD, driving while distracted. A friend of mine just lost his life this past weekend on his Harley because someone on the phone ran a red light.... Just as bad as drunk driving if you ask me. RIP Simon.

They do write people up for that in Virginia, using the section of the law that requires the driver to "use full and unimpaired attention while operating a vehicle" or something like that.

+1

There should be a fine + points on your license for using a handheld when driving .....like they have in many European countries.

Handsfree, although not perfect, is better and there are plenty of options.
