It is a setting in the cable box (If you are using one).... depending upon your box you have to go into the menu settings and ensure it is set to pass-through. What is the model of your box? We can determine if it is set to pass through or not...

So, I think I have it set right, not using the processing in the cable box, but I am sure there are settings that I haven't found yet. I will check again. It bugs me that the TV has a cable card slot (future proof?) yet the cable company talks about it being 5 years until they adopt that technology here. Who knows. Sounds like they have a lot of old Motorola boxes in stock to get rid of, to me. Don't even get me started on which HD DVD I should look at. Why can't we all just aqree on one format? Thanks for the pointer on the pass-through.
Hi JCL, oh most definitely, you do not want your signal from your cable box running through your DVD Player and *then* to your TV. No no! You should always wire directly to the TV.

I agree about the cable card setup. It was a US Federal mandate. The cable companies down here have down a half-assed approach to it, so it really is not worth worrying about.

The only bypass appears to be by means of coax connections on the back of the cable box, described as allowing bypass if the cable box is out, and then only for standard channels.
I just checked the AVS Forums (a specialty forum for Audio/Video), and it does not appear the Motorola 6200 has the 'pass through' capability. That is too bad. So, if you set the box to output 720p, it will pass through any stations that are 720p, but any stations outputting in 1080i will be DOWN converted to 720p and then your SXRD will have to again UP convert to 1080p. It's a pain in the neck, but right now it does not appear there is any way to fix this. Motorola is aware of the issue and will fix it with a 'future' box.

UPDATE: One thing you can do with your box is set 480 override in the 'settings' menu to 480i and let the SXRD do the processing. That should help with picture quality on standard definition (non high-def) channels.

And I'm far from an expert, those guys at the AVS forum have me beat big time

I have a Moto DCT something (don't see a model number anywhere). I went into the config menu, and don't see any option for pass-through (closest was RF bypass, which I know isn't the same).

Actually, I need both connections. The signal goes from the cable box directly to the TV, for best quality. It also goes from the cable box to the DVD and then to the TV, since it is a DVD recorder as well as a player. I wouldn't usually watch it through the DVD, but it is wired that way to allow us to record TV shows on the RW disks. Thanks for the comment.

Ahhhh OK, I wasn't aware it was a recorder. Neat!
