We came that way, simply for 'something different', on our last return to western NC from seeing DaKidz up in NJ. It was late October, and a Monday, so not exactly the equivalent of your time, lol!
It was ~75 miles longer than our 'usual route', by the odo, but we made it in the usual less than 11 hours for the nearly 700 mile run, which included dead stopped on the NJ TPk for 30 mins. We encountered none of those problems, (except dodging the ubiquitous VA state & county Revenue cops), and our only regret is that I-85 dumped us on I-40 so far east in NC, and we had to drive into the setting sun for 4 hours going west/home. Turkey weekend driving is a nightmare in many parts of the country, but from my 64 yrs on the planet, especially anywhere on the Right Coast. Imo, your experience was about normal for that time/occasion, but a funny 'quiz'. GL, mD

I would rather fly from RDU to IAD/DCA than drive. No lines at RDU, parking is a breeze. Arrived at RDU less than 80min prior to my international flight last month with time to spare. Unfortunately airfare between the two cites, just 45min flight, is always expensive.
