X was broken into last night... need advice

Hi all, bad news on my part. My X3 was broken into last night . A co-worker and I went to a friends house to feed his fish and switch his living room furniture with his bedroom furniture while he is out of town. I parked directly in front of his building, finished upstairs, then went 2 blocks away to have dinner. When we came back, my rear passenger side window was broken and my co-workers jacket and shoulder bag were gone. Nothing of mine was missing, but he had EVERYTHING in his bag.

Long story short, I guess I need to replace the window. I think the cost is around $95 for the window. I called a dealer near me and the labor rates are $140/hr. Do you guys think this is a diy job that I might be able to handle? My insurance deductible is $500 so I don't think it would be worth it to claim it.

Nothing like this has ever happened to me. Any input would be great.
Thanks a ton,

Jeff

Sorry to here that !! Would'nt you just love to catch them!

I am guessing insurance is different to here but on our insurance we get glass cover which you only have to pay a very small excess approx $100

Good luck let us know how you get on

Doesn't your insurance cover glass without a deductable? you might want to check into that.

That sucks. In a perfect world, we should be able to leave our cars unlocked and running, a pile of money on the console, and no one would take either. Since it's not a perfect world, dirtbags will steal anything if you give them half a chance.

Have you checked into a glass company doing the replacement. I would think that the labor would be cheaper than your dealer's shop rate of $140/hour.

Good luck!

Replacing the window isn't any more difficult then replacing the window regulator. Same basic steps. Use care with removing the interior door panel and the rest is a piece of cake.

Well I called multiple places to check on prices. Most (all but 1) of the dealers and glass shops are quoting $91-$99 for the glass. BMW San Francisco (imo the worst BMW dealer ever) wants $275 for parts....

Dealers are charging $140/hr for labor. Local shops are charging $40-60/hr.

We ordered the part from Peter Pan BMW (imo the best small BWM dealer ever). The parts guy is overnighting the glass for us. My wife won't let me or a local shop install it so she made an appointment with that dealer. The service department understands that it is an emergency, and the appointment is for 7:30am BUT it won't NECESSARILY get done today.

My wife is taking the car to the dealer in the morning (after she takes me to work)... My fingers are crossed.

Thanks for all the tips, fellas. It helped me in asking question to my insurance company and the dealers/shops. I really appreciate it.

-Jeff

Did you try www.safelite.com ? They will come to your home to fix. As a rule I never leave anything in sight, even an empty bag, unless I know the area I am parking in.

If you have a $500 deductible then you will probably have glass coverage. The only way you dont have it usually is for $1000 deductible. I believe it depends on the state your in. I had my car broken into and the pass side window where the lock was having a problem and when they opened it up free of charge I went ahead and repaired the lock mechanism found in X5world....

Where the heck are you finding dealers that charge $140 per labor hour?!?!

Even my local corporately-owned dealer only charges $100 Canadian per hour!
