MB: the most mentioned brand in '05s biggest rap hits

What happens to BMW?? Nah, that's all right but it seems rappers/hip hop artists are more into MB, Bentleys, Cadillacs, Rolls Royce...

BMW asks too much of its drivers. You know like "manual transmissions" and such

Personally I'm not sure how the top 10 list of names dropped by rappers is even news. Is there a study on the most dropped trucks in country music?

Plus I guarantee if you asked any rapper what a Kalishnikov rifle was they would stare at you like you were crazy.

There are a lot of things you could ask a whole lot of people ( me included ) and they would stare at you like you were crazy. I was looking over the "who's your favorite entertainer" thread and i was like a deer in the headlights. HUH was my continued response. And I agree with you; Who went thru the trouble to compile this list? And why was it important?

Remember this appeared in CNN's Money section, then read this part carefully:

Rapper 50 Cent was the most brand-dropping rapper of the year, with 17 product mentions in 7 songs, mentioning brands like Bentley, Cristal, Lamborghini, Mercedes and Nike.

It was unclear how many of the product mentions were paid placements -- advertising industry analysts quoted in AdAge said that revealing such a deal would likely undermine both the rapper and the brand's credibility.

The deals are indeed made, and they move product and create brand loyalty. I can't tell you how many times I've seen an Escalade drive by with a parking sticker in the back window from a shady apartment complex. There are lots of people who prefer to spend the majority of income on what they drive as opposed to what they live in- I'm from that kind of neighborhood and I used to be of the same mindset.

The reason you don't hear shout outs to Ford, Chevy or Dodge in country tunes is that kind of brand loyalty comes from someone's family, and no song is gonna change that. Mentioning a specific brand of truck would do the artist more harm than good- it would alienate those who are fans of the brands not mentioned in a positive way.

Makes me happy to know that BMW chooses NOT to pay rappers to mention/show their product.

What CNN didn't say was that those artists that drop brands the most, also get access to vehicles for videos, access to invitation only unvielings (like the 2007 Esco event) and some get zero leases. In return the automaker gets to see their product jump off the lot...

80s
Suzuki Sidekicks
Toyota Maximas
Jeeps

90s
BMW 5 series
Acura Legend
Lexus
Hummer

2000
Escalades
Navigators
BMW 750
MB CLS
MB G-Wagon
MB Maybach
Range Rover

it's just the further commercialization and cross selling of everything TV-Movies-Sports-Music to become a MegaBrand like Shaq (movie, sports, music), Will Smith (tv, movie, music), Jamie Foxx (tv, movie, music). You wouldn't believe the time and energy these guys put into brand dropping and the behind the scenes deals. It's worse that the last Bond film.
