Apple wins lawsuit Samsung must pay 1 billion

SAN JOSE -- A federal jury has sided with Apple over rival Samsung in a massive patent infringement trial between the two tech heavyweights and has awarded Apple more than $1 billion in damages. The nine-member jury accepted most of Apple's claims that Samsung copied the look and feel of its iPhone to roll out its own line of smartphones.

Samsung will not go down without a fight, that's for sure. I'm not sure if there are any appealable issues but they'll find something.

I haven't followed the case very closely but I think there is something to be said for Samsung's point of view. As a consumer, I want choices and I want competition to push companies to advance and improve. If one company beats down others by brute force and creative use of patent law, then the consumer does lose out.

Agree in principal. If a company want's to be competitive that's great we all benefit.
But don't steal and make your product so identical to another product that people can't
tell the difference. Come up with your own design, make a better product and let your
product compete on it's own merits.

i believe certain things in the allegations (now proven to be guilty as charged), were that the samsungs phones, or pads were rectangular... just like the apples... i hope there were more to it, than just a shape - in that case, every car on the market is copying another one - 4 wheels, doors, seats...

From my cursory reading of the new/current 'patents war', all of the main competitors spend gillions 'patenting' every minuscule aspect of every product, while buying up exciting patent 'features' and intellectual properties...for the main event of suing each other. The dough these companies spend on legal fees, legal dept, and hired gun white shoe patent firms must be enormous.

No dawg in this fight, though it is probably just round 2 or 3 in the ad nausea 'tech' phone/tab rassle...the WSJ and tech columns are chock full of this kind of spitting at each other, every day.
