New choice for recent oil change
![]() According to this site, Liqui Moly is the best oil you can put in your BMW’s or MINI’s engine. This invariably generates questions “BMW says I should use their Castrol 5W-30 oil. The label says it’s ‘full synthetic’ but Liqui Moly’s label says ‘synthetic technology.’ And Liqui Moly is more expensive. So why do you say Liqui Moly is better?” http://blog.bavauto.com/12165/bmw-an...-30-synthetic/

That would be a really bad idea. It is an LL-04 oil. BMW had problems with LL-04 oils in North America, because of fuel composition as much as anything (sulphur levels and ethanol combined to react with the additives in the LL-04 oils, and caused early oil breakdown). They issued a TSB on this topic several years back, and removed the recommendation to use LL-04 oils in North America for gasoline engines (they still use them for diesel engines). I am pretty sure that TSB is posted on this site, I remember posting it years ago.
Perhaps it isn't surprising that a web site run by an oil retailer suggests buying more expensive oil, and changing it twice as often. It is laughable, however, when they suggest that BMW doesn't have owner's best interests at heart, but that they do. They are simply scam artists, or they don't know better. I don't know which is worse. If you have already bought it, go ahead and use it. Just don't leave it in too long due to the known oil breakdown issues.

What kills me is that people dont seem to understand the whole 'snake oil' aspect of this business...they can say virtually anything, and know that at worst someone will say they are wrong. But they can recommend the wrong oil, sell race oil without adequate stabilizers, etc, etc, and know that there is zero chance it will come back to hurt them. |
