Jeep designed/built the new Cherokee on the already produced Dodge Dart platform/chassis. I wonder how well it's going to hold up.

Makes you wonder about their "Soul of a Jeep" marketing spew.

Fiat Compact platform - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Compact platform (also known as C-Evo) has been developed by engineers of the Fiat group for small family cars (compact car) and large family cars (mid-size car) with front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The first application using this platform was the Alfa Romeo Giulietta unveiled in 2010.[1] Fiat has invested 100 million euros in the construction of the Compact Platform. [2]


Specification

Developed in Turin, Italy, the new Compact platform was designed to be adaptable to future cars of the Fiat group as well as Chrysler group vehicles. The C-platform (used by Fiat Stilo, Bravo and Lancia Delta) was used as a starting point. Fiat engineers developed a new high-performance platform that uses only a central part of the floor from the old C-platform. The frame is made of 84% high-strength steel (the old C-platform was made of 65% high-strength steel), and 4% of the structure is aluminum. The front suspension uses MacPherson aluminum Evo struts and is 4 kilograms (8.8 lb) lighter than the previous steel struts (used in Fiat Bravo). The rear suspension uses an independent multilink suspension and each consists of two lateral links with an aluminum prominent longitudinal arm that mounts the hub and spring. [3] Being lighter than steel, aluminum usage in suspension bits results in a total combined weight savings of 14 kilograms. The framework for the rear seats and the magnesium alloy cross member reduced weight by 35% in comparison to earlier cars.[4]
The platform offers a compact transverse engine at the front with either front-wheel or four-wheel drive (4WD). The total weight of the platform in the standard version (on the compact models) is 174 kilograms (380 lb).
Long wheelbase version

The long wheelbase version is called D-Evo,[5] Compact Wide or Compact U.S. Wide (CUSW) in North America and will be available on future models of the Chrysler sedans like the Dodge Dart[6] or the next Alfa Romeo Giulia. The interchangeable modules make the basic platform suitable for vehicles of differing lengths up to 4.92 metres (16.1 ft). It was designed with additional features for a compact platform that could adapt even to sports cars like Alfa Romeo.
The engine range, combined with the platform, consists of the compact four-cylinder petrol 1.4 Fire, 1.4 Multiair, 1,750 TBi turbocharged and the 2.0 or 2.4 Chrysler GEMA engine and the diesel 1.6 Multijet and 2.0 Multijet. In the future, the Pentastar V6 petrol will be offered as well. Fiat and Chrysler plan to build about 1 million vehicles a year by 2014 based on this platform. Eight upcoming Chrysler Group vehicles are planned to be built on Fiat's Compact Wide platform, including the replacement for the Jeep Liberty.[1]

Yesterday I saw a new cherokee dead-center a crosswalk signpost at under 20 mph (slid on sheet ice while trying to stop for the red light). The post was around 6" diameter at the base and tapers thinner toward the top, about 9' tall .

Post was fine, the Jeep design allowed the post to deform the front end to the extent that there was contact with the engine.

I would have expected the pole to be knocked down before reaching the engine.

That new Cherokee is an absolute abomination.

Truth be told, if my old GC didn't have so many problems from the clunking trans bushing to crappy a/c creaking body etc. I'd still be driving it because the 5.7 Hemi was a beast and with simple suspension mods and tires it took me anywhere I wanted to go on or off road. Even though most jeep enthusiasts treated it like a red headed stepchild.

The "owner loyalty" discount sums up all the manufacturers who use it. It screams "You know what we engineer/build and are willing to throw you a bone to make the bad call by buying another one".

Engineer/build good cars and the previous buyers will come back without the "carrot on a stick" bullshit!

The new jeeps were an attempt at luxury and sleek design, its the wierdest thing ive ever seen, I dont understand that front end AT ALL. only one word can describe it....UGLY
