I think they had to change the name because of the non-BMW affiliation. The switch happened back when I was still lurking....maybe one of the elders can recall the details.

Sheesh, now I'm an elder.

There was a subforum on Roadfly, focused on the X5, in the early 2000s. The X5 was a new platform, and not all BMW owners felt that SUVs were appropriate to the BMW nameplate. The X5 crowd had its own identity. There was a mass departure for reasons relating to moderators but best left to history. The crowd went to Bimmerfest, in a new subforum. Eventually, the founders of X5World, UCrewX5 and Drex, created a new site and we migrated en mass again. At least that is how I remember it.

X5World started up in March 2005. You can figure out who the 'elders' are by how close to March 2005 their join date is. MD and LemansX5 were there, and several others who are still around. UCrewX5 is of course active.

Over time the site became very popular. It is possible that it attracted the attention of BMW corporate who saw it as infringement, given that the site had the name X5 in it. However, the resolution was handled between the site owners. The resolution involved renaming the site Xoutpost.

Jeff's (JCL) history is spot on. Several years back when our domains were X5world, X3world and X6world, we were contacted by BMW's legal department for "trademark infringement" for having "X5" in our domain name. Although I feel we would have prevailed, we opted to go the safer route and changed our domain name to Xoutpost. Now that there are a bunch of different "X" vehicles in the BMW lineup, in hindsight they probably did us a huge favor.

If there is an X5world.ru site out there, we have no affiliation with it and the BMW powers that be are more than welcome to go after them with the same vigor that they came after us back in the day.

I always thought a tundra solution was a snowmobile. Or, a dog sled for traditionalists.

Sure, but you are then probably eating them instead of using them for transportation.
