Thumbs down Shot over an Obama t-shirt?

Regardless of my support of Senator Obama, this is the exact reason why I will not place a yard sign on my property.

I saw a young African American man wearing Obama's Time magazine Cover on his T-Shirt several month back with something like "I could be that too."

As an Obama's supporter and as Non African American my choice for a candidate has nothing to do with his race. I hope all of his supporters feels the same way.

It is very unfortunate that race of the candidate is even an issues, to any race I must say...

I spend many days driving around downtown Atlanta and going into residents homes for my job. I can tell you from my personal experience, Obama is more of a celebtrity than a presidential candidate. On more that one occasion I have seen people selling Obama t-shirts, posters, etc. along the sides of the road. I went into a house today where the black homeowners had a t-shirt on a chair. It had Obama and MLK on the front, TOGETHER. I mean WTF? Something tells me that they are not that into Obama just for his politics.

It definately goes both ways, but it sure seems like there are a ton of people interested in Obama just because he could be the first black (half black) president and not because of what he stands for or what they think he can actually do for the country.

There could also be another perspective.

It could also be that both are true. That there's is a certain amount of pride in the fact that he could be the first black (half black) president, and they are buying what he stands for, and they think he can actually do something positive for the country.

Nothing unreasonable about any of that imo. ( The "T" Shirt part aint necessary though)

You may be right and there absolutely should be some amount pride in the fact that he may be the first black president regardless of what percentage of color he actually is. The first black president is long overdue, IMO. I am just not sure he is the right man for the job. I would hate to see him voted into office primarily based on color (being the first black president) when he may not be the best candidate. In other words, I don't think he should win just to show that the White House is an EOE.

In my little microcosm and from my own personal experience it just seems like many are primarily for Obama based on his color first and his qualifications second.

Like I said though, that goes both ways for sure. He is also not going to get votes based on his color which is equally as wrong.

Oh, and going back to the original post, being shot over an Obama shirt is flat out barbaric.

I rarely, if ever, peruse the threads dealing with politics, but I think Chris Rock said it well, when he said that it's as if everyone thinks black America doesn't vote on the issues, but instead votes based on race. Paraphrasing his comment: "It's as if on OUR ballots there are options such as: Vanilla, or Chocolate? Ahhh, I'll choose chocolate!" Unfortunately, race will factor in to this election, in both positive and negative ways, that's just the nature of the beast. The black people I know who're planning on supporting Mr. Obama are, in fact, voting based on their interpretation of his views of the issues, and how those views affect them.

This is a prime example why some people may think that there are a significant amount of black people that vote based on color first.

The interesting part of this is that many will say race shouldn't be an issue and we can all agree that perhaps it shouldn't be.

However the fact is Mr. Obama (love him or hate him) has done something that has never been done before and one of the only reasons why this race is being watched with such interest (weather some would like to admit it or not) is #1 because of what he is and #2 weather America is going to say.........Ok let's do this.

People (or should i say the world) is watching to see what's going to happen.
