Directly from a friend at Guantanomo Bay

Thought SOME of you would be interested in what a Navy Commander in Cuba has to say...

As always I greatly appreciate all of your support and emails…I apologize if I have not been as responsive in the past couple of weeks…you know with the Attorney General, the VCNO, the 3 Senators, the 8 Congressman, the White House Council (the ones who wrote the executive order to close GTMO but did not visit GTMO until 1 month after they wrote the report), the multiple and various Admirals and Generals and of course the budget comptrollers for both the Army and SOUTHCOM…I have been a bit pre-occupied. One comment I will share with those of you who have been tracking the whole “close GTMO” rhetoric in the media is a lesson I learned early on in my career at Ver izon which was “follow the money”. I quote the Comptrollers in our meeting with them last week: “You are fully funded for all operations through 2015, don’t worry about money, if you need any more right now based on the Walsh report findings, please let us know so we can get it for you”. So much for the “Close GTMO rhetoric…as I have stated earlier, these last 240 detainees are truly the worst of the worse and with the exception of the 60 or so that the State Department has been trying to transfer or release out of GTMO for the past 2 years, the rest are going to, or should remain in detention. I should caveat that none of the 192 countries in the world will accept them.

What I don't understand is this: if these people are truely terrible, then why not prosecute them, and put them in prison for their crimes just like any other criminal?? Why is that such a problem?

But instead, I continue to see them release a few more every few months, with no explanation. Some of them who have been released were held for 5+ years. How come these people were never prosecuted for their crimes and just get a free walk? Or were they innocent and the government is releasing them because they were detained for 5+ years by mistake?? I have no idea because the government says nothing.

I saw a couple of these guys interviewed on the BBC. They say they were never told why they were detained, and then after being detained for several years, they were just released without ever being told anything. It makes no sense.

I don't know that it needs to be justified to every "Eric", if 190+ countries don't want them, that should tell you something

They keep saying that, and then they release a few more who somehow manage to go back their native countries. That tells you that this statement about the countries not wanting them is obviously pure BS. Maybe your friend thinks it's true, and maybe even everyone working at the prison camps think so, but the state department knows better.

Ryan, I know that some/most of these prisoners are bad people but we live in a country that is supposed to respect individuals rights and people are considered innocent until proven guilty. The concept of locking away someone without due process is unacceptable.

The concept is that we should treat the same as US citizens and give them due process.

If you were in a foreign country should some foreign army capture you and throw you in jail for the rest of your life?

B - stop adding to your posts

If I was in a foreign country and killed some citizens for the sheer fun/ideology of it all...yes..I should be jailed.
