"Entitlement increases and tax cuts need to be paid for," Obama said. "They're not free, and borrowing to finance them is not a sustainable long-term policy."

"It's as if the administration and these Democrat leaders are living in an alternate universe," said House Republican Whip Eric Cantor of Virginia. "The quickest way to save money is to stop recklessly spending it."

Maybe this is the dose of reality that forces the public discussion on spending, taxes and bigger government.

Civil discussion but one that debates the pros and cons of big government spending and the associated increase in costs to all classes of our society.

Sooner or later it will get to the top of the priorities for discussion.
