From WCF:
BMW hosted a preview event to the IAA in Frankfurt where its Vision EfficientDynamics hybrid super car concept was officially unveiled. Company chairman and CEO Dr. Norbert Reithofer spoke and said something very interesting regarding his company's preferred future powertrain solution. "The car needs to evolve through innovation," said Reithofer . "We are the engine more efficient and make the total of vehicle technology more optimally. In addition, Hybrid is also for us a temporary solution. And especially for large metropolitan areas, a car is needed for electric base. We will continue our research work which hydrogen regard." So it seems that although the Vision EfficientDynamics is extremely advanced in engine and body construction technology, it is not the final solution for the foreseeable, sustainable future. To recap the 2+2 seater is powered by a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbo diesel hybrid with a total system output of 262kW (356 hp) and maximum torque 800Nm (590 lb-ft). It goes to all four wheels via two electric motors located on both the front and rear axles. The 0 - 100km/h sprint time is 4.8 seconds and peak velocity is electronically limited to 250km/h. The car's acceleration and top speed performance are stunning considering it has an average fuel consumption figure of 3.76 litres/100 km (75.1 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 99 g/km. http://img.worldcarfans.com/2009/9/large/5416283.jpg http://img.worldcarfans.com/2009/9/large/2578004.jpg http://img.worldcarfans.com/2009/9/large/5336270.jpg http://img.worldcarfans.com/2009/9/large/2998783.jpg http://img.worldcarfans.com/2009/9/large/9845179.jpg http://img.worldcarfans.com/2009/9/large/8047641.jpg |
OT, but I think it's funny how the Z4 in the background is parked next to the massive 7er that has lower fuel consumption. And even the massive X6 has lower fuel consumption.

The X6 is slower, and those are the figures for the twin turbo diesel (which is more efficient than a naturally aspirated gasoline engine). Great mileage though. The 7 is unclear, since the figure shown is better than even the standard 730d (which is much slower than the Z4). Maybe it is a newly invented 720d or 725d which doesn't have figures out yet. Or maybe it is 16.8, lol. If that is the real number it is good mileage, but can you imagine getting up to speed on a highway onramp? |
2013 BMW: Vision EfficientDynamics Is a Go
Published Jan 29, 2010 LISBON, Portugal — As proof that car companies no longer make showcars just for giggles, a senior BMW authority out of Munich has assured Inside Line that the Vision EfficientDynamics plug-in pure hybrid 2+2 concept car rolled out in September at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show is earmarked for production. No ifs, ands or buts. Reaction to the 356-horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque plug-in electric (one lithium-polymer battery stack + two electric motors) with dedicated lighter-weight three-cylinder diesel range-extending engine mounted amidships has been off the charts. Now we're all waiting for more details and, of course, that sticky price issue. Our executive source goes on to say that total volume is being debated, but that it will fall between 5,000 and 10,000 units. The prototype's powertrain and basic sub-3,000-pound assembly will remain intact, but, says the source, "there will be less of the synthetic glass and more solid structure added to the final design." Uh-oh. We know why these alterations are needed, but does this mean it's going to migrate toward being a sort of sleek Toyota Prius? Let's hope not. When we asked if this could finally be BMW's second true production supercar after the Giugiaro M1, the response was a firm "quite probably." So maybe our Prius/Honda Insight fears are overreaching. It'd be nice to maintain that 0.22 drag coefficient and the hellacious looks. IL also learned that the BMW future product engineers are also noodling nonstop with the hybrid drive system in order to make our test of the Vision EfficientDynamics prototype this summer in southern France a real-world high-speed thrill. It should be even quicker than the previously quoted 4.8 seconds to 62 mph. "And that name that the marketing people forced on us," says our mole, "that's going to change for sure." Inside Line says: Another stunning German electric land missile to make oil embargoes a thing of the past as soon as possible. Anything left in that 401(k), though? — Matt Davis, Correspondent |
Great news! Cant't wait to see what it is going to look like with production changes.
