thinking about a new 3-series...

Do any of you guys own a 328i x-drive? How is it? I'm assuming I can get a pretty good deal now since they will be rolling out the F30's in less than a year. I was taking a look at the 335i vs. 328i- both sedan, and equipped with x-drive. I'm leaning more towards the 328i for a reliable daily driver. The turbo engine is really nice and fast, but problems with the hpfp in the 35i engine seems endless.

I packaged the 328i xdrive with:

-alpine white on black dakota leather and aluminum trim
-value package
-premium package
-steptronic automatic transmission

it comes to a total MSRP of $42,225

How much do you think I can negotiate down?

thanks in advance.

For that price why not get a year old 335? More oomph, and it won't depreciate like a new one...

I really want a 335i, but the 328i seems a lot more reliable. What's keeping me away from the 335i is the problems with the hpfp. Also, for a DD in nyc, the extra 70hp is not necessary. The 328i has enough power for my needs.

What is the warranty on the fuel pump now, like 10 years or something? I wouldn't be as worried about that as I would the durability and cost to repair the turbo(s) down the road if you plan on owning for a long time. I do think the n52 in the 328 would be more reliable/cheaper long term, but it has it's issues as well. Here is one for example:

I haven't really researched all of the bugs about the 328i. I thought the inline 6 was pretty much bulletproof, guess not. I do plan on owning this for a long time, at least 10 years considering everything goes as planned.

Any ideas on deals or incentives out there?

thanks!

Don't get me wrong. I agree with you that the N/A engines will most likely be more reliable long term. I am just saying I wouldn't let the fuel pump issue scare me away from the 335i. Especially with the warranty they are offering on them.

I have not shopped new BMW's lately, so I have no clue on the incentives.

I also wouldn't let the HPFP issues stand in the way of buying a new BMW. I had an early replacement of my 535 HPFP around 2008, then no further problems. Earlier this year I went in for an oil service, and they advised that I would be getting a letter, as I was due to get the new style of HPFP in an upcoming campaign. They offered to do it then, which I took them up on. I was having no problems, and had the 10 year warranty promise, but to me they were standing behind their product, and I appreciated that. I checked with a few BMW technicians, and they all told me that they hadn't seen a failure since the newest pump came out (I think it is from a new supplier). They did a software update at the same time, and the car drove better than it had been (although I had thought it was fine).

I think the 328 is a good engine, but that engine is due to be retired. I just saw the new X1 28i, and it is a four cylinder turbo. The six cylinder 3.0 that is detuned and sold as a 28 now must be very close to end of life.

To me, racing to buy the last naturally aspirated engine in a BMW is comparable to buying the last model made with a carburetor.

I think the new 3 will be larger, about the size of a E60, and if the list price remains the same a better buy.

I test drove a 2011 C300 today to compare it to the 328i. I haven't tested a 328i recently, but have driven it when I got it as a loaner. The ride of the C300 was super smooth, my 2 friends sitting in the back said it felt a lot better than sitting in the back of a BMW. One of them currently own a X6 35i and will be trading it in for a CLS550 this week. He practically begged me to take a look at the C300. He told me that I could get a better deal purchasing the car with him together. The throttle response was somewhat slow compared to the 328i. The ride felt a lot better though, I didn't feel much going through a pothole either. This is important to me because the roads in NYC are in really bad condition. Steering wasn't heavy and BMW-like, but I think it suited me well, especially in NYC traffic.

I will be test driving the 328i tomorrow, and will really start thinking about which one I want.

As for the 35i engine- I really don't want to deal with the headaches and problems or maintenance with the turbo in the long run. My friend's X6 has only a little over 20k miles, and he is on his 4th hpfp. Although BMW is stepping up and standing behind their products, his car is still always in for service with no loaner to take home because he didn't make an appointment earlier. He asks "how do I know when my HPFP will break down?" and they say that they only have a limited amount of loaners.

I hope that I enjoy the 328i tomorrow!

The new BMW 3 will be better than the C300 just wait until fall before making your purchase.
