Do some research on the Passport SRX. Active protection.

No matter how discrete the detector may be inside the car, the windshield is not opaque. An officer will be able to see it in daylight unless you have it concealed enough to the point that performance is compromised.

It's rare for you to get advanced notice on anything.

It's not illegal to use a detector here in Oregon.. but my detector is perfectly discrete and hidden behind the mirror - knowing that I forgo the rear radar/lidar readings.

Big fan of the V1. The arrows are indispensable.

I use a V1 in the city and Highway. Set it to advanced Logic and there aren't any falses.(there are 3 settings, no filter, med logic and Advanced Logic. It is so advanced, it will pick up cheap detectors, warn you with a different signal and throw a J in the display, signalling junk detector.

Integrating the V1 with the Stealth One module is impressive. No lights on the detector, just a black phone cable. Warnings come up in the OBC display and muted with volume control on steering wheel. I put mine to the right and above the RVMirror. Virtually unnoticeable from outside the car if not using the suction cups.

IMHO, as far as laser protection goes, good luck. Any detector is counting on the fringe beams. The officers are trained to aim at the front license plate and only turn it on when targeted. It is, and will be a crap shoot. The v1 one provides both a front and rear Laser eye BTW.

Get the V1. I tried out a friend's and now I really want one too. I do mostly freeway/rural driving, so false alarms are minimal. I don't believe laser is used in the state. I can see how it would be annoying in urban areas though. I'll probably spring for one within the next month or so.

Radar detectors are illegal in VA and DC

V1 number 1 =)

No, you think? I knew that 7 years before I started driving. :captainob They also have huge signs at every border crossing.

"Welcome to Virginia. Where speed limits are preposterously low and you cannot use a detector".

then why do you need one?

The SRX sends a shifted signal. Cop doesn't get a reading, or it's skewed. These integrated systems have the sensors mounted in the bumpers and/or around the license plate area, ie. nothing on the windshield. These are high-end and very effective. If you're going to get a radar detector might as well get one that covers all the bases. Most people break the speed limit to a larger degree on the highway than anywhere else, laser detection important.

Fwiw, I sold my radar detector (8500) a couple years ago. Even if you have one, you always have to be on the alert however good it is. It's just not worth the trouble. These days I drive at 65-70 (that's how fast the middle lane moves around here, 75 on the highways with 65 limit) and drive completely relaxed. Once you start doing track events, your desire for high speed on public roads almost completely diminishes because the speeds just pale in comparison.

.02 up.

Clearly, you have not driven in rural Virginia enough. I rack up 150mi easy in one week.

10 over is enough for a revenue ticket even in the middle of nowhere. I don't drive particularly fast or reckless in anyway, and nor do I want to. I set a speed for myself given a variety of factors, and stick to it. The set speed is often a tick higher than the stated limit but not egregious. I will normally stick to 110km/h (68mph) in a 55 zone in central VA. That landed me a ticket. Now, I take a 30 minute detour around that particular county.

Driving 68mph on the Washington Beltway is too slow and the state troopers up there will not care. But certainly not the case elsewhere. I refuse to plod along at walking speed for hours on end. I've driven in 15 states and 3 countries, with never a problem. When my years of college are over and I find a job, I can move out of this state.

All I'm asking for is some advance warning to make a speed adjustment.

In VA, if the LEO see a radar detector they can pull you over, even if you're not doing anything else wrong, issue you a citation and confiscate the unit...it's not worth it with a $400 radar detector when the max reasonable ticket you're going to get is <$200...I never use mine in VA
