:iagree: If you have an E53, S1 FTW. You can mount it in the rear headrest if you aren't too worried about laser. There are some good writeups somewhere, and I think someone here might have done that.

totally Agree!

Almost took the V1 plunge, but 90% of my driving is city driving in familiar areas. The V1, in a highway application, provides better warning at greater distances, but also provides for more false alarms in a city application.

For that reason, I chose the Passport 9500i(x) - which has built in GPS - allowing for an absolutely silent cabin once you have all the false alarms programmed. It still provides more than ample warning on highways - just had a 30 second warning on Wednesday at a distance of about ~1 mile, over a small hill.

I use the 9500 as well for the same reasons... had the 8500 and a V1. Love the 9500 but a month or two ago the GPS went south in it now I have to send it in and pay to have it repaired :(

9500 is top notch and would have been my first choice over a V1 if it was not for my location and the V1's Arrows. California has no X band in use so I programed out the X on the V1 and run in Advanced logic in the city and have virtually no falses.

The directional arrows on the V1 seem like a gimmick till you get a real LEO. Knowing what direction to watch for the LEO makes for much less guessing. When you pass a LEO that is on the other side of the hoghway it's very clear from the V1's arrows.

If you really want protection you need to get something like a Passport SRX. A 9500 and V1 won't really protect you against laser, ie. it's always too late. The problem with 9500 and V1 is also that they aren't discrete if you do get pulled over.

Is there really such thing as protection from instant-on laser? I don't think so based on my research... you can hope for a "stray refraction" - but seeing as laser is such a narrow beam and has virtually no spread (hence the intrinsic value of the laser)... It's rare for you to get advanced notice on anything.

It's not illegal to use a detector here in Oregon.. but my detector is perfectly discrete and hidden behind the mirror - knowing that I forgo the rear radar/lidar readings.
