I'm closer on this with Krimson. While I think illegal immigration is MAJOR problem especially being in California I see this as a slippery Slope. Any Conservative who believes the Government should stay out of our lives and not take away our freedom should be against this. Could you imagine checkpoints where government officials check our "papers"? What stops them from expanding this to just about anything?

Now what I don't mind is locking up and deporting illegal aliens when discovered after being caught violating the law or some other instance where their status is discovered.

Now some might say they are already breaking the law and I agree...But you can't assume someone is breaking the law just because. It would be like police pulling over people who drive high performance vehicles or highly modified cars because they assume you were speeding. Not because they witnessed the violation but because studies show people with performance cars speed more often than people with economy cars. We fit the profile.

I don't want a government who checks everyone's papers just because they want to ask to see them.

Let's get serious about cracking down on illegal immigration but let's not stomp on the rights of Americans and sets a precedent for unreasonable search and seizure.

I think they would only check papers etc. if they have reason to suspect... not like multiple random checkpoints permanently scattered throughout. But if you happen to be standing in a group of hispanics in front the Home Depot looking for work, or obviously don't speak a lick of english when spotted at the corner store then yeah you should be checked. And every single legal immigrant I know would be on board with this as they went through all necessary legal steps to come here and don't like all the problems caused by the constant influx of illegals.

I would have to agree most strenuously with your points 2 and 3. Those are absolutely amendments that need to be made. I understand that the 3rd will take Constitutional amendment but it is a MUST. The "anchor baby" phenomenon/loophole is one major basis for pro-amnesty supporters to argue for amnesty or some euphemism for amnesty program. They cry about separating families and I even heard one advocate on NPR claim that immigration law is about family reunification. :doh: Not only do these "anchor babies" form the basis for an illogical argument to allow illegals to stay but they cost us a ton of money from the moment their little heads breach until the day they die. I live in a very Hispanic area and we happen to be close to the Mexican border so inevitably we get many migrants up here. One of our local hospitals has somewhere near 300 babies delivered a month, most of which are anchor babies with NO INSURANCE or any other means to pay the hospital bill. They have what's known as "parking lot babies" where they have illegals waiting in the parking lots until they go into labor and then go in to the ER and cannot be turned away. Tada! A brand new anchor baby! (Many Mexicans I know and work with have explained this to me.)

Take away citizenship by birth, only allow children of LEGAL RESIDENTS, I'm not even talking requiring both parents to be CITIZENS. That would mean children of parents here on "green cards" as permanent residents would be eligible for citizenship. But if either parent is illegal, no citizenship. IT IS THIS WAY IT IS IN MANY OTHER COUNTRIES, PARTICULARLY EUROPEAN. Let's adopt this policy and we will see illegal immigration decrease.

...also, part of the solution exists south of the border. We have got to have a Mexican president that is seorious about improving the economy of Mexico and stopping the drug problem there.

True that! Why is it that the Mexican government is complaining about the new AZ law? Why would Mexico want it's labor force leaving for the US? Wouldn't the Mexican government want to dissuade its nationals from leaving? Why is it that years ago the Mexican government created and handed out survival kits for people planning on illegally entering the US?

"The kits will contain medicine and information to prepare emigrants for what they face on the trip, which usually includes a trek through the remote deserts and mountains of Arizona or California because of increased U.S. border security.

The packets will include anti-diarrheal medicine, adhesive bandages, aspirin, acetaminophen, medicine for snake and scorpion bites, powder to prevent dehydration, water, salt, dry meat, cans of tuna and granola.

Women will receive 25 birth-control pills, men 25 condoms. AIDS is a small but growing problem in rural Mexico. It is spread mostly by men who contract the virus in the United States, then infect women back home.

The program will train hundreds of volunteers - people who already make a yearly trek north - in first aid and emergency health care. The volunteers will be given surgery soap, sutures for sewing wounds, thermometers, gauze, cotton and other implements to attend to migrants' medical problems.

The $2 million program, known as "Vete Sano, Regresa Sano" (Leave Healthy, Return Healthy), will begin June 15. It is funded by the Mexican government, which also is seeking funding from the California Endowment, a Woodland Hills-based health foundation. The endowment has set aside $50 million for programs that improve the health of California farm workers, part of that to be used in conjunction with the Mexican government."

The Mexican government needs to do more to fix its own major problems, including but not limited to the massive drug violence and not taking care of their own economic woes. There will always be legal and illegal immigration, especially to the US, but if there was more opportunity and more incentive to stay in the country of origin, there would be less people wanting to leave.

I guess money isn't the only thing they are sending back home...

Im not a fan of what the governor of AZ has implemented but lets face it...we are most to blame .... since Americans in the most part hire these illegal immigrants...

These include some whose ancestors got to Arizona before statehood -- some even before it was a territory. They were in America before most Americans' ancestors arrived. Arizonans should not be judged disdainfully and from a distance by people whose closest contacts with Hispanics are with fine men and women who trim their lawns and put plates in front of them at restaurants, not with illegal immigrants passing through their back yards at 3 a.m.
