Sure, that's his statement, but I wonder if it is possible that Miguel was the one feeling upset over the shirts...:dunno:

"They said we could wear it on any other day, but today is sensitive to Mexican-Americans because it's supposed to be their holiday so we were not allowed to wear it today"

I guess this is what happens when there are so many opinions or standards
as to what is acceptable regarding human behaviour in a case like this.

That is everything that's what's wrong with this country today.

First excuse me, "their holiday" WTF?

Apparently we've accepted as a society that 'hostilities' are to even be anticipated at school. Very sad. Still though, I want to see the ACLU and celebs involved as they would had it been 5 students told to do the same with Mexican flagged swag. Can't wait to see Shakira out there telling us all how it is so unfair.

What's next, during February only black children can go to school to avoid any problems with "black history month"?

Who knows but if we're going to "wonder if it is possible that Miguel was the one feeling upset over the shirts..." I guess one would have to wonder what
might be the motive of the young folks for wearing all the American stuff on May the 5th? Was their habit in the past? or were they trying to make a personal statement which may have been view by some as stirring the pot.

Considering that immigration is a hot button issue I just wonder what was "REALLY BEHIND" their decision.

I know you are just stirring the pot, but I don't agree at all. I think it is fair to at least question why a guy named Miguel asked them to take off american flag shirts that would be allowed on any other day. If they weren't allowed at all, it wouldn't be an issue, but why that particular day? As Wagner said, if the shoe were on the other foot, civil rights groups would be all over this.

To be honest, it doesn't matter what the students motivation for wearing the American flag shirts were. They are American flag shirts...to say they are not allowed on a Mexican holiday, but they are any other day of the year is where I (as well as everyone else) should take issue.

Actually not stirring the pot at all. I'm just saying like all flapjacks
this story has more than one side.

It was reported that Rodriguez told the students he did not want any fights to break out between Mexican-American students celebrating their heritage and those wearing American flags. Was that fair? Life isn't fair.

"The Morgan Hill Unified School District responded this way

"The Morgan Hill Unified School District does not prohibit nor do we discourage wearing patriotic clothing," Smith's statement read. "The incident on May 5 at Live Oak High School is extremely unfortunate. While campus safety is our primary concern and administrators made decisions yesterday in an attempt to ensure campus safety, students should not, and will not, be disciplined for wearing patriotic clothing. This matter is under investigation and appropriate action will be taken."

None of us know the climate within the confines of this school and that may be why administrators made decisions in an attempt to ensure campus safety.

This happend when I went to school and when my kids went to school so
No pot stirring on my part. Just looking at all sides.;)

Pretty good press statement. By changing just a few words, I came up with another...

"The State of Arizona does not prohibit nor do we discourage being of Mexican heritage," Arizona's government officials said. "The fact we need to enact SB 1070 is extremely unfortunate. While everyones civil rights are our primary concern, state officials made decisions yesterday in an attempt to ensure all of those who are in our state illegally are removed from our financial "tit". Legal citizens should not, and will not, be disciplined for residing in our state. This matter is under investigation and appropriate action will be taken."

Sadly, Michigan is equally as dumb..

FOXNews.com - Michigan Elementary School Principal Investigated for Blacks-Only Class Trip

Quicksilver 05-06-2010 07:58 PM

"Students who are not black were excluded from the outing"

IMO...... Yep that was dumb. No matter who went on that field
trip it would have been an eye opener for all the students.

Part of his letter shows where he missed an opportunity.

"The intent of our field trip was not to segregate or exclude students, as has been reported, but rather to address the societal issues, roadblocks and challenges that our African-American children will face as they pursue a successful academic education here in our community.”

That intent could have educated all the students regarding this issue. Too bad for the teacher. He missed a good teaching opportunity.
