30D Turbo, V8, V6 ... which one?

Hi Tymatk,

A friend of my replaced his (older) V8 x5 with a (new) diesel V6 x5 cause the fuel costs where killing him. Depending upon how old, you're looking at either a 4.4 or 4.8 ltr V8; compare this to a 3.0 ltr V6.

Don't have any of the stats (power, ...) in front of me, and it's gonna depend upon which year model your choosing, but unless you're pulling a 3 tonne horse float I suspect that any will have sufficient pulling power for your purposes.

Re offroad, for general activities is should be ok. You're probably looking at 17" tyres minimum, which give you a couple inches ride height over a standard car, which hopefully gives you some feeling about it's offroad capabilities. (But remember, the car has been designed and build around a primary target market who drives on tarmac, so don't kid yourself into thinking that a stock X5 vehicle will perfectly follow a heavily modified offroader (say a 100 series L'Cruiser with custom 3" suspension lift) up a grade E offroad track.)

I think you’ll find all the engines used in the X5 diesel range (E53 & E70) are actually inline 6’s, not V6’s.
In Australia there are 3 main diesel configurations in the E70.
These all use essentially the same engine in varying states of tune with varying induction systems.

E70 diesel specs
3.0d (2006-2008) – 3 litre inline 6; 173kW/520Nm (single turbo)
30d (2008-2010) – 3 litre inline 6; 173kW/520Nm (single turbo)
30d (2010 -) – 3 litre inline 6; 180kW/540Nm (single turbo)
35d – 3 litre inline 6; 210kW/580Nm (twin sequential turbo)
40d – 3 litre inline 6; 225kW/600Nm (twin variable vane turbo)

Jdd;s absolutely right, X5 6 cylinders are all I6's and not V6's. Typo on my part and sorry for any confusion here.

If you want any sort of off-road ability, the post-04 facelift E53s are the pick. The facelift added xDrive ( ie. a self-locking locking centre diff), the diesel engine (the best choice by a mile) went from 135kW/390Nm to 150kW/480Nm plus both gearboxes added an extra speed (from five to six). The standard (235/65 R17) tyre and wheel spec is also the best choice for off-road. Running the 17s also means that your spare will be an exact match for the road wheels, again handy off road. Finally, the standard, rather than the sports suspension is best off road.

Just thought of sharing my opinion on the engines.
Got a 2008 4.8i, absolutely love the silky smooth v8. You hardly hear noise while cruising and when u hit the pedal u hear the beautiful v8 showing off itself like a sports car.
Its not my daily drive so im not very worried abt fuel consumption and x5 is not meant to be really off the road either but just some light offloading (due to low ground clearance, no wheel articulation, stiffened stabilizer bars, monocoque chassis design rather than ladder chassis, low profile wheels these are all characteristics of a sports car)
If it's my daily car or im pulling something really heavy, then I'd get the diesel, im also a little sceptic about long term maintanance of diesel engines due to their complexity on BMW's (please correct me if I'm wrong) especially if you're planning to keep the car for a long time.
Its been 4 years and I'm quite pleased with the engine, sometimes it makes me forget I'm hauling a 2 tonner
Incase youre wondering y i didnt buy a sportscar? The fact that's it's an SAV makes it much more capable than a sports car, still giving u the pleasure of driving a sports car
