I have cooper ATP in 265-70-17 on my 2003 X5 MT. They fit well. There is not much clearance, but they fit. These are all-terrain so you should be ok.

I have an 03 5-speed. I have never driven a 6-speed, but would think the extra gear would be great for the highway. I put bigger tires on mine to lower the rpm at highway speed.

I have 265/70-17 on my 03 X5. they work out to 31.6". They don't rub, but boy are they close. I would think with that with the width and height you might have a problem without spacers.
