I use a Tekonsha Prodigy controller which seems a pretty decent unit. I fitted it myself with no problems. You wouldnt want to be retro-fitting brakes to the trailer itself as this would be big $....

Yes - in manual mode it stays in 2nd after you stop. This works quite well, and if not an uphill start, towing or offroad, it would be fine all the time. The auto mode does not work this way...
