I dropped the oil and nearly 5 litres came out (brown and burnt smelling) and it took around 5 litres of the dexron 3 oil I bought today.

I gather that only around half...

I want to change the oil/filter on my 2001 3.0d auto gearbox, but i want to avoid paying BMW dealer inflated prices for the parts if possible.

It's possible the new battery is faulty or was discharged when you bought it. Is is heavy duty enough? My new one is a Bosch 100mah 830cca

I tested the battery again this morning and the voltage had fallen to 12.25v.

Is there no one on this forum who can offer any help with this?

The tester tested the alternator and that was fine.

He said the battery is in very good condition and the cranking amps are...

I forgot to mention, there are no problems with the lights, the car seems to go into sleep mode OK and there are no problems with the climate control fans.
