Check your intake manifold for oil

If your v8 x5 is smoking, after prolonged idle: pull off your air intake and push open your throttle flap. It's wet with oil, no? That's what's causing your smoke.

I would not recommend disconnecting the PRV lines while the engine is running. You'd likely not do any damage, but its not worth the risk. Even if you managed to seal the intake ports, its not...
