N57 40d - noisy timing chain or something else?

Hi everyone,

I current have an M57 E70, however saw a 2011 E70 LCI N57 today for sale.
It has some sort of engine noise, which to me sounds like a timing chain. It has a rough, hunting idle too...

Sorry, I forgot to update this.
Turns out it wasn’t a relay. After a 1.5 hour drive the exact same thing happened.
Connected ISTA+ and the DDE was offline again. The DDE didn’t come back online...

Or seeing what codes reappear when you try and start it.

The only codes there that look like they might be related to your no start...

It's also worth noting that the LCI (2011+) 35d had the N57 motor, as opposed to the M57 in pre-LCI cars.

The N57 is more prone to timing chain issues and the chain sits at the back of the motor...

From doing a quick google - code 3012 is "exhaust camshaft installation faulty" which appears to be a VANOS related code. Assuming you've got the 3.0L petrol N55 (or N52) engine?

Thanks guys. Got it home and the cranking/no start condition started again. I plugged in the laptop with ISTA and there were about 50 errors. I cleared the slate clean and did a CAS/DDE alignment....
