N63 - Oil consumption - what is the cause?

I know a few people have issues with oil consumption on the N63. And I've seen the service bulletin from BMW saying that 1 qt every 750 miles is normal.

I like the idea of getting the battery at half the cost at Pep Boys. Question is can they do the necessary 'coding' if they install the Battery or can that only be done at an official BMW Indy shop...

Is there a DIY on an oil change for the N63 engine? Looking for drain plug size (8 mm ???) and filter location. I only have SAE hex so I am guessing I'll have to buy a metric one.
