Thermostat failing won’t cause coolant loss. It will lead to overheating if it doesn’t open or slow engine heating if it’s stuck open. The best way to find a coolant leak is with a dye kit.

If the low coolant light is coming on and the indicator is level with the neck of the tank, then the sensor or wiring is bad. Double check it with UV dye. As others have said.

Don’t guess. Put in dye and use a black light to see where it’s really leaking from. The most common cause is the plastic overflow tank.

This is my experience too. Smoking from oil in the intake manifold. Fixed by cleaning the CCV system. It happens about every 20k miles and needs recleaned. Still on my original valve stem seals.
