Yes electric thermostat likes to keep engine hot.

On the 3.0 I see 93-97C

On the 4.6 I see it go to up to 117C sometimes.

^well, the 4.6is motor could be considered more special because of its Alpina roots and only the Alpina B10 ever shared it. The N62B48 of the 4.8is saw service in a lot of other mainstream BMW's.

I had a similar problem of a high reading float...

I had a similar problem of a high reading float when I was working on this issue. Mine was an improper install bh the tech where the float actually hung up on some hose in the tank.

Right on for the OP's pre-facelift, but facelift models are X-drive and use a specific fluid from the dealer. Havent seen a commercially available equivalent for those at the time I did my X-drive...
