Ah that’s interesting about them not being load bearing. They are probably quite strong as they are pressed and hence are part of the subframe, rather than being welded on (I’d think welded on tabs...

Not sure the shop I use locally can weld. They have a Hunter alignment machine - and are very good at set up - but specialise in tyres and alignment.

I take track cars to a race focused alignment...

I think welding tabs onto the sub frame is the way to go - I don’t know how to weld, and need to see if I can find someone who would be happy welding without removing the fuel tank….

No probs - but I’m not sure how interchangeable a standalone shock is. I think they are slightly different for the airbags to sit on?? Bmw only supply the entire strut assembly, obviously…

Yep they do. The airbag bolts on to the top of the damper. I’ll attach a link to the instructions which show it a bit more clearly….

Many thanks. Just had another look and started the car and tried to raise it to the highest setting. Car lifted and air gushed out of the passenger front bag - bloody great bit hole/tear in it.

Hi All,

I have a 2004 4.8 X5 with 2 axle self levelling air suspension. Done about 125,000 miles. This morning the front of the car had sagged, with the arches resting pretty much on the wheels....

Mmm. I kind of want it to work ”the way it should” - but I hear what you’re saying. I have a piston rebuild kit and will see if I need a cylinder kit too. Then I guess I’m looking at control units…....

That’s pretty cheap and worth the bet… will rebuild the compressor again as the kit’s only £25 (and ordered) and see. Thank you for responses!
