It could be the bushing. They're rubber and tend to fail over time. You can replace just the bushing with polyurethane instead of rubber.

I tried installing it a different way. I put the retainer clip in all the way before the heat exchanger. Pushed in the heat exchanger until I hear a click. The retainer clip must of only been holding...

Been browsing around here the past month since I picked up a 2003 X5 3.0 Sienna Red.

I replace the thermostat and after the first drive, my heat exchanger pops out and starts...
