20s and Toyo Proxes S/T? Why so damn loud?

I love the handling and the looks but good lord are they loud! I put Toyo Proxes S/T tires on stock BMW 20s (like the 4.6is has on it). It sounds like wagon wheels are on my beloved X5, and driving to the airport last Friday my Dad told me there must be something wrong with my driveline........needless to say I was embarrassed. I have the music cranked up pretty loud usually and don't pay too much attention but these suckers are NOISY.

Are the BMW 20s noisy or is it my tires? Opinions?

its your tires. my OEM 20's arnt loud.

Get better tires. The Toyo's suck IMHO. You might look towards the Michelin Touring HPs. I have them and they are dead silent.

Oh boy-and I just ordered a wheel/tire package that had the Toyo S/T tire with no other option...the Hankook's I currently have are quite noisy and I was hoping these would be better, but looks like it probably won't. I just called the company I purchased them from, and they have already shipped out so I can't cancel the order.

That's just great.

Whats wrong with Michelins or Pirelli's? I don't think BMW offers Toyo's on a stock X5. Stick with what works.

well...don't accept the package and resend back to sender...

that shouldn't be a problem

Thought so, although my S500 has T1R Toyos in 18 and they are dead silent as well. ???????

I didn't notice any noise issues with my Toyos on 20" stag 87's.

That's good to hear.

Due to my concerns, I just called the place I bought them from (cleanin out the garage on ebay) and talked with a couple of people there. They said they haven't had any complaints about the Toyo's, but he did say that although the Toyo's are not the quietest tires available, they are not noisy. As soon as I get them on I am going to go have my alignment checked so that they will not be wearing unevenly, which can definitely cause excess noise.

On another note, he mentioned that the AFS wheels they sell no longer need hubcentric rings as of about 8 months ago as the wheels are now hubcentric for most BMW's, including the E53 X5's-now THAT is a relief! I have dealt with aftermarket wheels before that utilize hubcentric rings, and it just never turned out that well for me.
