Staggered Wheels

Hey guys,

I'm trying to get 4 staggered wheels in black. any advice or suggestions?

and tires as well.

motordavid 06-21-2010 08:53 PM

By staggered, I assume you mean the staggered look via wider rear wheels & tires vs the front set...
As in oe 132s, et al.

If so, they come up on the for sale forum on occasion; seldom in "black", but one
can get them powder coated/painted/black chrome by a good paint joint.
Keep an eye out.

Yes, one can get a set of wheels where the fronts are wider than the oe
wheels, and the rears are even wider.

For example, my '01 3.0 came with style 69 wheels which were 8.5" x 18",
front and rear...I changed to style 132 wheels, which are 9" x 19" front,
and 10" x 19" rear; thus, the new front wheels are 1" wider than the originals, and the rears are 1 1/5" wider than oe, and 1" wider than new front wheels.

Some posters have even gone to style 87s, which are 20", even wider rim, and also staggered.

I doubt you would want wider wheels in front, than in back, but I don't think that was you question...

i want all four wide wheels. any suggestions?

a quick question though.

besides the looks...
1) what's the benefit of having all four wide wheels?
2) what's the benefit of having staggered wheels (only wide rear wheels)?

motordavid 06-24-2010 02:11 PM

Just imo,
1-all four wheels the same size is standard "square/even" look...nothing wrong with it.
Really wide wheels give car the steamroller look; odd, but everyone has their own
bag.
How "wide", with all four wheels the same size, are you thinking of?

2-staggered wheels "look good" to most, esp with wider rear wheel/tire combo.
There may be some slight benefit in cornering with the wider rear wheel, but most of
us never get it pushed that far except in emergency handling situs.

That's about it for me on this thread.

What size would you like? 22"?

juppalgae 06-24-2010 09:55 PM

well, in terms of the size, i've seen some suvs with all four wide wheels. i believe they were bmw x5 sports with 4.8 engine. any idea how wide they are?

i don't want something rediculously wide that's out of proportion.

juppalgae 06-24-2010 09:55 PM

oh btw, what's the size on stadard wheels i have on my x5?

What year and engine size of your X5? Any pics?
Size is written on side of tires e.g. 245/40R/18..check your current tire size.

BMW 20" wheels on 4.8 are always staggard(rear wider).

As motordavid said staggard wheels look much better.

juppalgae 06-27-2010 01:31 PM

but can i also go with 20 on all four?

also, no one has still explained what the benefits are besides the looks for

1. staggered
2. all four 20 inch wheel

detail-king 06-27-2010 02:09 PM

You can either do staggered which is wider in the rear or you can do wide all the way around like 22" by 10 front and rear. Its your choice.

Benefits of staggered are better handling especially around corners and performance but all depends on how you are driving the vehicle. For all wheels same around, its better if you have a AWD vehicle because the overall diameter front and rear should be the same and in 22", many more options if you do the same all around.

Hope this helps.

for x5 53s, you recommand staggered or all 4 wheel? if i go with all 4 wheel, must go with 22? not 20?

juppalgae 07-06-2010 10:26 PM

what's the width spec for original 4.8 staggered (front and rear)?

9 and 10, 9.5 and 10.5, or etc?

LeMansX5 07-06-2010 11:19 PM

4.8is stock rims
Front: 9.5x20
Rear: 10.5x20

juppalgae 07-07-2010 09:50 AM

anyone have links or pictures of x5 with 10x20 and 11x20 staggered?

1) Less understeer, wheel/tire rotation ability.
2) More understeer, less tramlining, better acceleration/braking (less mass), better gas mileage (less mass).

edit: The OEM style 87 rear wheels when used on the front, (being 10.5 +30ET) come amazingly close to the front part of the fenderliners at full steering lock (outsides of the tires only... the insides of the tires at full lock have room to the rear part of the fenderliner), if you happen to consider running 20x11 all around, consider the offset for the front, and space out the matching offset rears accordingly.

I'm not sure what your intentions are, or if 20x11 all around could fit and still get around the steering and flushness/appearance issues. 10.5 +30ET in front will require fender flares, and there is "some" (a little bit of) room before hitting the suspension.

O/T:

Just thinking out loud now.... to fit 20x11 all around on the E53, the offset would have to be perfect... it *might* be doable, but definitely with flares. A width of 11" with +34 to +36ET would be *close*... higher than +36 sits the outer edge further inboard than the outer edge of a +30 10.5", so going higher than +36 wouldn't be neccessary as the +30 10.5" looks great with flares. BUT... the lower you go in offset, more of the front part of the fenderliner gets eaten by the outside of the tires at full lock. 11" +36 up front would look SICK, but that might hit the suspension and/or rub on the flexible part of the brake lines. At the end of the day... a 315 tire is still going on it (and should be accounted for along with the offset), so... it *should* be doable, but all that work is being done to fit something with more mass and the same contact patch when there is already a solution for using the 315 in the front. Sorry for rambling on... :p:

I just re-read this again and although this sounds obvious, I would like clarification....

are you considering running different diameter front and rear wheels? You would still have to compensate for the tire sidewall to maintain an overall equal wheel/tire diameter between the front and rear. Not only would this be aesthetically unpleasing, you risk damaging the center differential. Example:

315/35/20 (assuming 10.5 width) diameter is 728mm
275/45/19 (assuming 9.5 width) diameter is 731mm

While this is the "closest" I think you could get running 19F and 20R (not that you'd want to) the overall diameter difference is 0.4% which equals 2.9 additional rotations of the rear wheels/tires every mile. This might not damage the center differential (don't know much about it), but it is a risk. All that aside, the greater differences between sidewall sizes could cause "interesting" handling characteristics.

If I totally misunderstood your post as staggering diameter and not width, please disregard.

Hi David, my premier membership lapsed causing the PM box capacity to go way down. Try again at any time. :)

bigwave2255 07-18-2010 11:27 PM

from my humble experience with my Diesel powered X5 i would think that 9 or 9.5 inch wide front wheels would be about as wide as you would want to go, now my car is probably a little nose heavier than petrol engined cars but i have found that as the tyres get almost to worn out that the steering becomes quite heavy, i also noted that the 19 X 9 i have, don't tramline anywhere near as badly as the 9.5 X 20 fronts do,

just my thoughts
